This country is experiencing an opioid crisis right now and has been for the last several years. In the state of New Jersey, the number of opioid-related overdose deaths has increased every year from 2010 until now. There was a slight decrease in 2014, but overall the numbers have continued to rise.
This is what the National Institutes of Health have reported for New Jersey about the number of overdose deaths.
Nearly 90% of the 2,900 reported drug overdose deaths in New Jersey involved opioids in 2018—a total of 2,583 fatalities (and a rate of 29.7). While most drug overdose deaths in 2018 involved an opioid, overdose deaths involving specific opioids are not included for the state because the data reported did not meet inclusion criteria. (NIH)
Something more has to be done about this opioid crisis. We are losing this battle! Since the regulations have been put on prescription opioids, people that have gotten addicted are turning to the cheaper and more easily attained heroin. Most of the heroin supply these days is tainted with the powerful and deadly drug fentanyl and more and more people are dying every day!
